Any GPS user want to come to Jamaica with me to facilitate a 600 person challenge?

December 7th, 2009Students of all ages and backgrounds are becoming familiar with satellite positioning. I think they are interested in the high tech aspect of digital programming and the invisible power of radio waves. The idea that radio waves from different sources can be transmitted to a reciever to determine location is Star Wars like.
Many schools do not have the budget to provide multiple units for the students’ use. I teach maps, compass use and navigation with GPS. I have been the recipient of many educational grants that allow me to bring my unique programs into schools and community programs.
Search this site www.ultimatetreasurehunts.com and ask me how I can come to your group.
Phones and GPS
June 18th, 2009We are working with a company from France that has developed unique software for a Nokia phone. www.incenteam.com facilitates corporate team building, as well. Their devices have a screen that teams can view all of the other teams as well as the caches they are searching for. We experienced it in Central Park earlier this year. caches disppear as they are discovered and teams can ‘freeze’ another team by directing their device at them.
We were hoping to combine forces here in the US, but US cell phone data only services make the cost per unit intimidating. The US cellular phone networking industryis still behind the global systems of Europe and Asia.
In the mean time, we are looking to discover a phone that will fit out GPS need without Christian Menard’s unique software. www.thecellphonegps.com might have some hope for equipment.

Don’t forget the maps!
June 13th, 2009
GPS handheld systems and automobile GPS navigation did not make maps obsolete. Everyone still needs to know where they are in space and relate to the real world. I regularly field comments that imply that someone with a GPS would be faster in the forest than someone with a map and compass when getting from one place to another, but truly, there are few situations where it wouldnt be more efficient to choose routes that avoided difficult terrain. An accurate map can tell you that. The GPS gives you a straight line to follow and may just lose battery power or sufficient sky coverage to be accurate. Always bring a map and know how to use it. And if you don’t know how to use it, visit www.ultimatetreasurehunts.com
Trying Something New
March 9th, 2009Not everyone finds technology intriguing. There are many individuals that find using a new piece of electronic equipment intimidating. It is not just a particular generation that stands back from the new iphone. Often women hesitate to put their hands out and they defer to the men. Some teams have established leaders in the workplace. In many of my team building games, I want everyone to have the same status. Inviting participants to enter into this learning experience in a group setting is a great opportunity to give them a positive experience with new technology. It is important to manage the event so that savvy GPS users are not the only ones that come forward to handle the directions. I create a fun atmosphere where the focus is on a goal other than the GPS units. As a group they must overcome a particular challenge and I emphasize that the directions make using a GPS new for everyone.
Can-You-Find-It challenges allow people to leave the event with an interest in the equipment beyond our use. I expect them to have confidence in themselves and each other by overcoming problem solving activiies and working together. Wwe notice that the next generation is unafraid to try new software or computer programs. They are always ready to figure out how it works and are unafraid of making a mistake. We can learn a lot from them.
Hello world!
February 10th, 2009It’s been a while since I have paid attention to the blogging world. I have to get into the habit of writing and posting in three different places, now.
